.----- GS Cof jel-Converfittion. fibly could be conceived, for Jefus Chrift, his eternal Son, did take upon Him our Nature, and was made a curie for us, that knew no fin, that we might be made the righteoufnes of God in Him ; and therefore fiand not upon any hard tearms, ifpeace may purchafed any way but by fin, ftand not upon it, for this is as becomes the Gofpel ofChrift. Yea, Andwhenyou are reconciled toyour brather, befo reconciled, ets tobefirm inyour reconciliation : Not as force, there is peace made between them, but how ? fo as they are ready to take ad- vantage againft one another upon any mifcarriage afterwards: God doth not do fo with you, the Gofpel holds not forth fuch a peace as this is, that God fhail be at peace with you for the prefent, but look to your felves afterwards, God will take all advantages againft you that he can ; if there had been fach a peace made between God and you, you had been in Hell long before this time, and therefore let your peace be a firm, a fel- led, and a confiant peace; Oh : that this were but thought on in there contentious daies, wherein there is fuch breaches between Brother and Brother, in every town, in every family, and none almoft but are broken off one from another with an irreconciliable fpirit; Oh ! how unbefeeming the Gofpel of Jefus Chrift is an irreconciliable fpirit ? Certainly God hath not made thee to knowwhat the myfterie of the Gofpel ofpeace is, who haft war in thy heart and tongue againft thybrother. And that's the fecond thing that the Gofpel .holds forth unto us. Only take this one note in this fecond thing, That whereas there are many arguments to move us to fach a converfation as now I am urging upon you yet let Chriftians above all arguments make the Gofpel tobe the argument ofarguments to move them to it : As now, for the matter ofpeace, there are many arguments to move us to be at peace with our brother, from the inconveniences that will follow upon our breaches & the like, now Phew your felves Chrifti.ans in this, Above al ar- guments make the confideration ofwhat you underftand in the Gofpel to be thegreat motiveof motives to prevail with you for peace, and this argument will do it when nothing elfe will do it. It may be a friend comes and perfwades you to be at peace, you
