Goffiél T(emifsion. lays ir, fo I mull not conclude my (late is bad without the Word fay fo, roo; but I find many diftempers and many wandrings in my foul ; give me leave to ask you this, where Both Gods Word fay that fuch a man that hath a great many wandring thoughts is not juftified ? where does the Word. of God fay that a heart that is under the remainder of fome corruptions , and the foul labours under them as much as under any burden in the world ; where does the Word fay that that foul is not jufiified ? many people in the cafe of trouble of Confcience, although they have fome evidences and good ground out of the Word for them, yet will have many fears and doubts 'becaufe of the remainder of fuch and fuch cor- ruptions in them ; but now the ground of their doubts is their own fears and nothing out of the Word ; and fo when any (peaks and applies the Word unto them, they cannot fay but it is fuitable to their condition, and that God bath (hewn mercy unto them ; but fo foon as you are gone, the fears and fuggefttons of their own hearts prevail againft them, to take away all their comforts more than all the applications of the Word prevailed to uphold and continue their comforts ; it is tuft with many that are gracious,in the cafe of fears anddoubts as it is with the wicked in regard of their hopes, a wicked man bath the Word again({ him, that he is not in a good con- dition, but his own Pelf-love and conceit incourage him to prefume thathe isin a good eftate ; now he regards his own opinion and conceit, and prefumes upon that that his eftate is good, more than on whatfoever is Paid unto him out of the Word that it is not fo : fo the people of God although they are in a good eftate, yet their ovrn fear fo damps their hearts that makes them queftion that it is not fo, but the ground of it is their own fears, as the ground of the wicked in thinking their eftate is good is from their own opinion ; fo the People of God many times from their own conceit and opinions , rather than from the Word, think their eftate is-bad : Take this Rule, Asyou muff receive no comfort but out ofthe Word . you muß not receive any trouble but from - the Word ; when you receive trouble any other ways, you do not confider that God has laid your efl:ares fo high that all
