Verf.24. 75 /slow though this naay have refpet to the litteral or proper hardnefs of the flesh of Leviathans heart, yet we arc not to flay in thatfenfe ; for there is a moral or metaphorical hardnefs, as well as a natural or proper hardnefs. The heart of one man is faid to be hard, and the heart of another foft and tender, not be- caufe the natural flesh of one mans heart is hard, and anothers Loft, but becaule of amoral hardnefs or tendernefs in the heart of the one or other. There is no difference between them, in thebody of a good and bad man, as to tendernefs and hardnefs; but the foul -heart(if I may fo fpeak) of the one, and of the other, differ exceedingly as tohardnefs and tendernefs. The heart of e- very good man (as to the spiritual conftitution of it) is foft and tender; but the heart of every evil man is hard and cony. There is a threefold moral hardnefs of heart fpoken of in Scripture. Firft, Impenitency for fin, is often called hardnefs of heart.
