...--------- Tq¢ Chap. 4t. Er,pofitionupon tbe Book, of J oB. Verf. 25. (being purfued with their own guilt) flee when no man purjueth (Prow, 28. z,) or (as another Scripture fpeaks) At the foundof a fhaken leaf ; fo it is natural wall men to fear, in cafe of reaLand apparent danger, efpecially if the danger be like a Leviathan, verygreat, or if a Leviathan raife himfelf againfi them: And therefore Jefus Chrifl himfelf, being in our nature, and cloathed with flefh, though finlefs Beth, began not only to be afraid, but amazed (mark 14. 3 3.) a little before his paffion, when he law that grearefi Leviathan, the Devil, together with manygreat Leviathans, railing themfelves to fwallow himup. And, if when a Leviathan raifeth up himfelf, the mighty are afraid, how lhall the mighty be afraid, when God raifeth up him- felf that's the deign of God in this paffage. The holy Pro- phet gave this caution to all men (Zach. 2. 13.) Be fslent,O all fefh, before the Lord ; for he ie raifed up out of his holy habitation. As if it had been Paid; the Lordnow thews himfelf he was be- fore as one afleep, or laid down upon his bed, but now the Lord is raifed up. What then ? Be filent, Oatlflefha The mightieri have reafon then to be filent : How filent ? There's a twofold fi- lence ; Fiat, from fpeaking; Secondly, from boafling. That charge in the Prophet is not tobe underfîood of a filence from freaking, but from boafling ; as if it had beenPaid, Be in fear and reverence, for the Lord is railed upout of his holy habitation. Another Prophet tells us, that at the Lords appearances the migh- ty (hall tremble and be afraid (Ifa. 2. z9.) having laid a little before, The loftinefs of man fhall bebowed down, and the haosgbti- nefs of man fhall be made low, He adds, They (halt go into the holes of the rock!, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of theLord, andfor the gloryof his Majeffy, when he arifeth to fluke terribly the earth. When the Lord arifeth to (hake this world by his judgements, he will make the mighty tremble, and run into the holes of the rocks, to hide themfelves from his dreadful preCence... If a creature, a Leviathan, caufeth the mighty to fear when he arifeth, hoes much more may the mightier of the world fear, whenClod arifeth ! and therefore that prayer of David (Plat. 68. z.) Let God arife, let h s enemies be fcattered ; let them that hate him, flee beforehim, may well be refolved into thisconditio- nal propofition ; If God arifeth, hie enemiesfhall befcattered, and all that hate him fhallflee before him, This
