Chap.4,. Expofition upon the Book of J o B. Verf.26. 761 Ertl, Of the itnpenitrablenefs, or impregnablenefs of the fades, skin, and flefh of this Leviathan. Secondly, Of the greatnefs of his courage, flomack, and fpi- rit, in the midaof greatefi dangersand oppofitions ; both which are (hewed in the 26, 27,. 28, and 29. verfes of this context ; which are all of a fence, and therefore I (hall very briefly pats through them. Verf. a6. The fword of him that layeth at him cannot hold. We have in the compafs of thefe four verfes, as it were a whole magazine of armes, of war-like infiruments and engines. Armes are of two forts. l~ìrfi, Offenfive. Secondly, Defenfrve. Offenfve armes are likewife of two forts. Firfl, Snch as we (hike with,or make ufe of at hand; of which fort we reckon the fword and the fpear. Secondly, Suchas are ufed at a diflance; of which fort are ar- rows, and darts, and flinbHones : All thefe offeníve weapons are hereexprefly mentioned. And likewifewe have here defen- five armes, with which we cover and fhelter the body, in a time of battle ordanger, from taking hurt ; of which fort the helmet is apiece of armour for the head, and the habergeon or brea(l plate, for the fore-part of the body. So that here (lay ) we have all fortsof armes. And as we have all forts of armesbrought together, fo we have the unprofitablenefs or unferviceablenefs of them all, or their utter infufficiency tohurt Leviathan, or to fave any manharmlefs, or from beinghurt by him, as will appear,whilc- I run over and touchupon thefe words. 'The fwordof him that layethat himcannot hold. The fword is an offenfive weapon, with which we af1'aulc our adverfary :at hand. Now though a man doth layat Leviathan with a (word, that is, ufeth his utmofi skill and firength to make the fword enter, yet it cannot hold, or, as the Hebrew is, will not Refilirdui:rr Jlandor abide ; It will either be broken or dulled, and the edge tergar`o p#ul. of it turned and abated,,or it will rebound without leaving any Éezg impref ion.
