Chap. 4a. anExpofelen upon the Book of Jo B. Vetf. 2. up the power of God, together with his wifdom (verf. 4. &c.) He is wife in heart, andmighty inflrength; who bathbardned him- felf againfl him and profoered ? If any ask, what can God do ? jobanfwers, Hecan remove the mountains, and overturn them in hie anger, be (baked) the earth out of its place, he commandeth the Son, and it rifethnot, and fealeth up theStars, he alonefpreadetb out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the Sea. MI there are fpeakingsforth of the Almightinefaof God; and he that can do thefe things, furcly candoall things, Now feeing fob was there fomuch upon this point before, how is it that here he faith, I know that thou canil do every thing? as if this were fome new matterwhich he was not acquainted with before, or had never ut- tered. Ianfwer, it is true, fobknew this before, but he did not know it before as he knew it now : Though he knew the Lords power before, and fpake of it, yet the trouble of his fpirir, and the an- guifh of hinfoul under his fufferings, did very much darken him as to thisknowledge; and therefore when fob faith, I know that thoucanf do every thing, this knowing is not to be underflood as oppofed to ignorance only, as if fob knew this now, and did not know it at all before; but knowing here is oppofed toa Idlerde- greeof knowledge, or knowing here imports ahigher andgreater_ degree of knowledge than ever he had befo re concerning the power of God. fob fpake fometitnes before, as if he knew little.. of this great truth, and he much detracted from the abfolute power of Godover all creatures by his complainings, efpecially that he and other innocent oneswere affli&ed; as alfo, by his earn elf delireof knowing whyhe wasaffli &ed, being innocenr,there- by intimating, that he was not fowell fatisfied in the dealingof Godwith him,nor had wholly refigned up himfelf to the foveraign power and will of God, to be difpofed of at his pleafure ; fo that in this fhort cenfeflìon fob feems to fpeakmore largely, thus; Nowat length, Q Lord, Iknow morefully than ever, that thou haft a moll jufl right and power tocommandand difpofe of all things, and that thouboth doff and may!? ejfeflwhatfoever ?leafeth thee ;,nor ought any tomurmur at, much left refill thy coonFels or dealings, feting every thing is, and cannot but be jell and righteous which thou doff. We conclude then, fob knew.this truth before, but not as he knew it now,. Hence 791
