The f# fort is natural a &ions, as eating, drinking, fleeping, &c. in which (whatever many think to the contrary) Confcience bath an intereft, becaufe they require the propofing of God's glory as their end ; and he bath prefcribed a way how to go about them aright. The 2d fort is civil ations, as mens being exercifed in this or that 'lawful irnployment, trade, calling or occupation ; and here Confcience hath an intereft : For it is Paid, that the plowing of the wicked is fin ; Which, when gone about after the right manner by the be- liever, is fervice to God, as well as his praying. The ;d fort is moral a &ions, fuch as are done from a prin- ciple cf moral honefty As for inilance, when a man bargaineth and maketh a promife, anent fuch and fuch things to be performed by him ; to keep his word, which is morally good; yet is it not truly religioufly and chriflianly good, except it be done in obedience to the command of God, and with refpe& to his ho- !nour. And here allo Confcience hath interefl ; for, as a man cometh fhort of thefe things requifite for making it a truly religious or Chriflian a &ion, it will challenge and accule in fo far ; and, when they are prefent, it will excufe and commend him. The 4th fort is external duties of religion. 'What is it, I pray, that makes the difference betwixt formal and hopocritical fervice and worfhip, and that which is accepted as fervice to God Is it nor, that one perfon performs fuch duties confcion- ably and Chrilianly, according to the rules prefcribed anent the right performing of them, and another not ? The 5th fort is inward duties (or graces) fuch as repentance, faith, love, hope, &c. of all which there are counterfeits, fame things very like them, which yet are not indeed thefe. Confcience path here like - wife a concern, and makes a difference : As, fuppcfe two men are forty for fin, and we may fuppofe them to be fomeway alike, or equally forrowful; and yet the forrow of the one is accounted the grace of repen- tance, and the other's not, becaufe of the want of the re- quifites of gofpel or gracious forrow, or forrow after a godly fort, as the apoffle calls it, r Cor. 7. i i.
