194 Zermo72 2. 4 The 3d ufe is of exhortation, to advert more to this te$liinony of Confcience, in performing `duties. O learn to refleE on yourfelves in every thing, and to ask yourfelves what ye are doing, that ye may know if ye be right or wrong ; if wrong, that ye may take with it, and be humbled for it ; if right,` that ye may be comfor- ted in it : We conceive, this would be a nota`le guard to tendernels, and keeping communion with :ßód ; and a fovereign help to prevent many fins, and much hypo - crify in our way of doing things ; even to be taking exaf notice, if we b; indeed doing that which we profefs to be doing, if we be fpeaking to edification, if we be pray- ing in earrieff, when we pretend to be praying, &c. zdly, Obferve, That, when Confcience is well fatisfied in a particular a&ion or duty, it can fignify its fenfe thereof to the man that performeth ir, and fpeaketh a good word for him : This is the thing that Paul's Con- fcience doth here ; he is fincere in the thing that he af- ferts, and it beareth him witnefs of his fincerity, when he adverteth to it. z fl, I fay, Confcience can fignify its mind and fenfe of a particular a &ion or duty, if it be well pleated, and can (peak a good word for the man; it can fignify its mind at any time, but, when it is well plea- fed, it fignifies it, by reflifying for the man. And, ;dly, I add this, If tnen advert to it, and if it be asked, becaufe it bath fomething to fay always, yet men will not hear, nor know what it faith, except they advert well, and refleót, and take good heed to it. idly, Obferve, That it is very flrengthning, confirming, comforting, refrefhing, and fatisfying to a man in a parti- cular a &ion, to have the teflimony of his Confcience for him. This beareth Paul through here, amidfl all chal- lenges that might have been raiícd, from Peeking of him - felt, or from following revenge in what he afferts ; There is no fuch thing, faith he, my Confcience beareth me 7witnefs of the contrary : 'Tis not a tnau's ation Pimply that
