Whom I have font unto you for the fame purpofe, that he »nay know your efiate and comfort your hearts. H E eftate of a man before God is the relati- on that he ftandeth in unto God, as God is the free fountain of all fpiritual life and falva- tion, and the determiner of mens everlafting conditions either in heaven or in hell : So that when we queftion about a m.tns cítate , we queftion, Whether he be in ChrifLor not ; Whether he have true grace yea, or no; Whether he be one of Gods children or no , or whether he be yet no better then a reprobate. There be three things to be conuidered in this definition of every mans eíl ate. Firft, it is á relation unto rod; not as a man is in himfelf, it may be rich, it may be poot in the world ; but I fpeak here as he is in relation towards God , Whether he be rich towards God, yea or no. I do not fpeak as a man in re- card of others ; It may be he is a father or a tonne, a matter or a fervant a King or aSubjeft: but in relation to God ,Whether Gods fervant or no, Gods child or no.
