An Expo(ttion of the Epifile ~ do, and are made hap.PY in him; the fame eternal life that we have, they have, Serm. X. mtdthis is eternal IJje, to know God, mtd to know Je(us Ghrif/, Joh.r].7· their V""""V"'-' happinefs lieth as our happinefs, in feeing God Incarnate, in feeing God in the flelh, in feeing God face to face, and Ius Chn!l: for ever. And fo much for the affociation wluch the Angels and the Elett have, and lhall have one among ano– ther, and what communion and relation they have with and to Chri!l:, as a Head. · I will give you but a Caution or two, (which is the third thing I am to do;) and fo I will conclude. The lir!l: Caution is this, That Je[tts Chrifl he is only a Head to them, he is l10t a Redeemer. The expre!lion here, ver.7. is not, that he redeemed Angels and Men; No, faith he, I11 whom we have redemption, We only: but both they and we are gathered to him, as a Head, as the word here fignilieth. You know I told you, that there are two forts of benefits we have by Chri!l:, the one founded upon our relation to his Perfon , the other founded upon his Merit and Redemption. Now, the benefits that Angels have by him, are not founded fo much upon his Redemption, (how far it is, I lhall difcourfe upon the third thing, when I handle this, Hathgatheredtogether a/Jthiltgs tohimfe!f;) bwt the be– nefits they have by him, are founded upon their relation to his Perfon. That is the fir!l: Caution. The fecond Caution is this , That it is certain that Jefus Chrif/ is fo a Head unto Men,as he is not unto Angels. Though he is a Head both to them and us,and all (both Angi:ls and Men) aregathered together;,. o1u headitJ him, yet he is fo .a Head to us as not to them. You lhall fee a wonderful Priviledge that we have, in thi• fame fir{/ of the Ephejirms,ver.2r. (this Chopter holds forth this unto us) for there the Apo!\le telleth us, that God ha th advanced Chri!l: far above a/J prittcipaJityandpower, and might aJJd dominion, (meaning Angels,) atJd bath put a/J thi1l~s u11der hu feet, a11d hath givm him to be the head over aJJ things ' to the Church. Here the Church, and his Headlhip of the Church, is a di!l:inCl: thing from that relation he benreth to Angels, as here it is mentioned; he bath a fuperiority over Angels for the good of the Church: he is fo a Head to his Church, as not to Angels, I know they are mentioned as well as Men in that verfe; But, how are they menti6ned? Not that he is the Head of them, as he is of Men, that is not the Jcope of it; but the fcope of this place is only this,That he that is above p_rintipaJities and powers, is the Head of the Church; he bear– eth a more fpecial"relation to them, than he cloth to Principalities and Powers, and is above tbem in order to his Headjhip of the Ch11rch. Hence it is that the Angels ate.not called the Members of GhrifT, you have not fuch an expri!lion in the whole Book of God. As God is fa id to be the Head of Cbrif/, 1 Cor.11. having ari influence into Chri!l:, yet Chri!l: is not a Member of God: So, though the Angels are fa id to come !into Ehrill: as a Head, and he •is their Head, yet lvlembtrs of himno wh, re you read it; forthat is peculiar only to the Saints, to the Elect here on Earth, to the Sons of Men; I will give you more things wherein we differ from them. Jeftu Chrijl, he is not a Common perfon, reprcfenting -them as he reprefented us, as he did while he wos he;e belo'l' ;' we obeyed in him, we died with him, we rofe with him.
