I 3· 'That they may re.ft from their Labors, and their Works .follow them. Sometimes it is put for the Merit of the Work, R.om. xi. 6. And if by Grace, then it is no .more of W•r-ks ; otherwife Grace is no more Grace. But if it be of Works, then it is no mort Grace; otherwife Work is no more Work, here Grace and Work, that is to fay, Merit, are oppofed to each other. See Gen. xxvii. 3· So much of Nouns, there are fame Metonymies in Verbs, as Vctbs of Knowing, and fuch as betoken Af[eftion or OperatiQn, of which kind arc, Verbs that fignify to know, which befides the bare 'l''""'• or knowing, denote the Motions, AffeCtions and EffeCts, that are joined with Knowledge, as Pfal. xc. 11. Who knoweth the Power of thine Anger? that is, who confiders, or regards the Power of ·thine Anger? fo as to awake .from the Sleep of Sin, and ferioufiy to repent? Ifrael doth not know, &c. Ifa. i. 3· that is, conlfders nor, nor takes Notice of the Bleffings the Lord gave it. Jer. viii. 7· Luke xix. 41. John viii. 43• Why do ye not know my Speech, that is, approve it, and with a faithful Affent receive it? The Anfwer of Chrift (giv– ing the Reafon of this) follows, viz. 'To Know is put for Ejlimation, or Judgment of any Thing with RefpeCt to its Value or Worth, as 2 Cor. v. 16.
