130 Chap. z. .4Commentarievpois vs. Here then our met its ,and fatisfa6lions, and all inward iu- flice, is excluded from the iutlificationof a finner. To this end Paul faith , that we are ittflifledfreelyby the redemption that is in Chrifl,Rom. 3.24. that weare made the iulice ofGod inhim(and not in vs.) z.Cor.5.z t.that hegatte hing /elfe to deliner vi,G al. t. 4. that he bath purgedour runes 6y hir/ilfe,Heb. . and not by any thing in vs. Hence it appcares , that the Papiflscrre , and arc deceiued , when they teach that Chri[t did merit , that we might merit, and fatis(ìe for our (clues : for thenwe fliould not be iu(buied by our faith alone. Thirdly , hence we learne, that a finner is iuflified by meere faith: that is, that nothingwithin vs concurres as a cauCc ofour iu(lification , but faith ; and that nothing, apprehends Chrifls obedience for our iutlification, but faith. This will more eafily appeare , if .ve compare faith, hope, and loue. Faith is like an hand, that opens it felfc to receiuca gift, and fo is neither loue, not hope. Loue is allo an hand, but yet an hand that glues out, communicates, and difiributes. For as faith receives Chrifl in- to our hearts : fo loue opens the heart , andpowers out pralle and thanks to God, and all manner of goodnes to men. Hope is no hand, but an eye that withly looketh , and waiteth for the good things, which faithbeleeucth. Therefore it is the onely propertie of faith to clafpc and lay hold of Chrift , and his.be- nefits. it is ol)ieE1ed, that true faith is neuer alone. I anfwcr thus. Faith is neuer alone in the perlon iuflifìed, nor in godly con - uerfation : but is ioyned with all other vertues. Yet in the a&, and office of lutlification , it is alone. The eye in the bodie is not alone : beeing a ioyned with all other parts, hand, Foote, &c. n.euerthcicflè, the eye in feeing is alone. For no part of the bo- die (call, but the eye. Secondly , it may be obiei?ed, that teeing iuflificd by faith alone, we are faucd by faith alone : and fo may hue aswe lift. I anfwcr, faith mull be confidered as an Infliument,or as away. if it be confidered as an in(lrument to apprehend Chrifl to our fatuation; we are onely fiued by-hi-tin on this manner. Yet ilfaith be confidered as a way, wearenot onely fated by faith. For all other vertues and workes arc the way to life as well as faith, though they be not caufes of filtration. Thirdly,it is obicacd, thatnot onely faith, but allo the (Kra. merits 5 to 15 20 25 33 35
