180 An Expofition upon Chap.b of our Apoftle, contain an exhortation to that pur pore, and here beginneth the lécond part of this Chapter;the hrft part was do&rinall, this latter part i: pari - neticall or hortatory. T r sa, What be the part: of the exhortation contained in this 12. nerf ? S i L. Three: First, the fubitance of the exhortation, [Let not finne teigne in you] Secondly, the reafon why wee fhould not fuller finne to reign, in thefe words, [.Therefore] and [ Mortali.] Thirdly, the meanes how to hinder the kingdom of fin, [By not obeying the Infra of TIM. Now expound the svorda,and tell us what doe ye call [Sin?] S r L. The corruption and proneneffe of our nature to all evill, this naturali corruption is here called tin : First, be- caufe it is the punifhment of the fin of our fir!t parents. Secondly, the matter and caufe,root and fountain of all other fins. Thirdly,becaufe it hath the proper nature of fin. T I M. Hom prove ye that it bath the pro- per nature of fin? S r L. First, it is the tranfgreflion of the Law,Rom.7.7. Secondly, it ltriveth and rebelleth againft the motions of the Spirit, Rom.chap.7.verfe 23.I fee a Law in my membera rebelling, &c. Thirdly, becaufe it ingendreth death , which is the fruit of that which is properly finne. Rom. 5.14. and 6.23. Original! Tai. When may Jiirabefaidto reign? orme` g,ff S tente t> fin r L. W hen the lulls and motions of formally, fin are contented unto, and followed and nor tha ,natter or Without refillance, or when it is done mother of readily,which fin willeth and comman- fn. deth to be done. Tr M. What is meant here by the body? S r L. The whole man confifting of foul and body;now he doth rather name the body then the foul,becaufe fin is firft conveyed into the foul by thé body,and 'afterward executed and fulfilled by the body,as an Organ to the foulin commit - ting of fin. Firfl,fceing Chrift hath put in- to them the grace to mortifie their fin, it is their part not to fuller it to be idle and unfi uitlull ; but labour more and more to keepe under and matter that enemie which Chrift hath already begun to flay and deftroy. Secondly, becaufe we are mortali and fubje& to death , there- Mnrtofl. fore our r'efiflance of finne mutt be the fironger, fneing it will fhortly have an end, Thirdly, if we firive againft the kingdome of finne to hinder it, wee are lure to conquer it,otherwife it wil over- come us to our everlafting fhame and detìru &ion. Tr M. But whet needeth Chia exhortation` to the faithful], in whom finne cannot have any kingdome, becaufe Chrift is their King, and ru!etb them outwardly by bid word,. and . inwardly by bit Spirit? S I L. It is very needful!, becaufe by; their own care and endeavour in refitt- ing fin , it is kept from exercifing any rule or kingdome over them. God who will not have fin to rule in his children, the fame God willeth his children not to be fecure, but to doe what they can to flop and hinder die power and courfe of fin in themfelves : God workes by means. T I M. Tell no now what is the f eciall means to hinder the kingdome 'of fin ? S L. Not to obey it in the lulls thereof ; where by this word [loft] is meant not corruption of nature, but the firft lirrings thereof, even all the evill delires and motions that fpring from it, which may appeare to bee fo by thefe reafons.
