!ä ,J 'sf 156 The Covenant of Works, &c. Chap. 31. fedne jf'e of the man to Whom the Lord imputeth ,righteoufne ff'e without Worts, ( that is, wherein his bleffedneffe doth confift,) laying, Ble fed are they whole iniquities are forgiven , and whole fnnes ace covered; Bleed is the man to Whom the Lord will not impute fin,Rom. 4. 6, 7,8. The inftrument or hand applying, is Faith: Being jufli- fied freely by hi grace, through the redemption that is in lefts, Chrili, Whom God bath let forth for propitiation through faith in his blood, Rom. 3.24,25. But the fubjeet on whom this bleffedneffe refis, is the godly righteous man : The Lord bath fet apart him that u godly for himfelf, Pfal. 4. ;. The man that hathclean hands, and a pure heart who bath not lift up his fowl unto vanity nor fworne dc- ceitfully; he 'ball receive the bleffing from the Lord, and righteoufne f f e from the God of his falvation, Pfal. 24. 4,5. There is a concurrence of fundry caufes in mans happineffe ; but all falls upon the head of him that is ftedfaft with God in Covenant , that comes up to the termes and conditions of it. He is pronounced, and ¡hall re- maine for ever bleffed ; and without holine f f'e no man 'hall fee the Lord. It is queftioned by force, whether it be the truth, or the degree of thefe graces which are conditions of the Gofpel -Cove- nant, upon performance of which we may conclude our A¡fu rance of happineffe ; but the determination of that ( being thus put) is eafie, No man in true grace ¡hall go to hell, or milfe of heaven; God doth not adorne man with that glory to reject him. The Apoftle exhorts to love not in word, nor in tongue, but in deed and in truth; and fora motive adder; Hereby we know that we are of the truth, andJball afore our hearts before him, r John 3.18,19. But the minimum quod /ic, when it is grace that arifeth to that de- gree of prevalency, to be accounted true; is not fo eafie to deter- mine. It is not every faintifh delire that is the work on which all this glory refts. It muff be a work of farther power and efficacy on the foul ; for fatisfaftion of which, I ¡hall referre the Reader to the learned labours of my much honoured neighbour, Matter Anthony Burge fe, now in the Preffe whiles this is under my pen, CHAP.
