44 The Covenant of Works Chap 7. offaithcboth fundamental & fupperftructive.Wheti Fífber the Jefu- ite told Dr. Featly, that it was lolid Divinity that a Conclufion de fde, muff neceffarily be infer'd out oftwo Propofitions de fide,Dr. Goad (being prefent as Dr. Featlies aflìftant) interpofed in thefe words, 1 mill maintain the contrary againff you or any other, That a Conclufion may be de fide, although both Propofitions be not de fide, but one of them othertrife evidently and infallibly true by the light of reafon or experience, giving inftance in thisConclufion, Chrigtes efl rifibilit, which he faid, & truly was de ftde, though both.Propof ti- ons whence it is infer'd are not de fide.Omns homo ell rifibilis, is not a Proportion de fide, or fnpernaturallyrevealed in Scripture, yet thence the Conclufion follows in this Syllogifine, ()Innis homo ei riJbilis, Chriflus eft homo, Ergo Chriffws e1 rifibilis, which is +a Conclufion de fide, affirming that Melchior Canis had judicioufly handled and proved this ter4ent, which he faid he could other- wife demonftrate to be infallible; to whom Dr. Featly affents, Second dayes difputation, page 85. It were eafie to frame many fuch Syllogifmes. If an heretick fhould affirm that Ch rift had on- ly a phantaftick body in appearance only, how would you prove the contrary, but with this Syllogifme, He that is truly man bath a true body, and not a phantaflickbody only ? This is a pofitior! in reafon, Chrifi ù truly a man, this is a Propofition de fide in Scri- pture, whence followes the Conclufion de fade, that Chrifl hath not a phantaflick body. if one fhould deny that Chriff had a reafon - able foul, affirming that his body was informed by the Deity in- ftead of a foule, muff it not be thus proved, Every true man bath a reafonable foul, Chriff is a true man, and therefore Chriff bath a reafonadle foul? The City that ruleth over the Nations of the earth, and is feared upon (even hills, is the feat of the beat. This is a Scri- pture- Propofition; but that Rome then ruled over the Nations of the earth, and was feated on (even hills, we know by hiffory and Geo- graphy ;whence the Conclufion follows, that Rome is the feat of the beaff. Abundance of thefe may be framed, where the Pro- pofition oppofire to the Conclufion, is either an herefie, or at leaf' an errour in faith. The Conclufion is of faith. Difputing againff Ubiquitarians and Tranfubftantiation, to hold up the Or- thodox faith, we are neceflitated to make ufe of maximes of known reafon. If they were denied ùs , the new crew now ffart up, that deny all confequences from Scripture, and will have none.
