And for thi$ ca4fe alfo, our Lord ]efi.1s is not fimply called Adam, or man ; but the laft Adam, and the fecond man, whofe feed differs from that of the .firfi man, as Abraham's feed from Adam's·· feed; but he is fimply called lfrae!~ without any epithet at ·:illl; _and his feed is plainly determined to be the eleCt, I fa. xlv. 2 5. ' In the Lord thall all the feed of Ifrael be jufiified i' even .as in the fir!l: man all the fee,d of Adamwas condemned, Rom. V.. I 8. For, as the firft man was fimply called Adam · or man, becaufe, in the fiifi covenant, he was acom– pend of all mankind; he ,was all n1en in law-reckon– i-ng, they being all reprefented by him : fo Jefus Chrifr was a competid of all Ifrael, that is all the' eleCt; he was all Ifrael in law ·reckoning, they being all repre.: fented by him. And thus we have the true ground of the univerfality of that expreffion, lfa. liii. 6. ' The · Lotd bath laid on him the iniquity of us all; i. e. of all Ifrael, that is to fay, all the elel"f.. The which is confirmed by a parallel text, bearing the type, where– of this bath the antitype, viz. Lev. xvi. 21 .
