C t A Pr. 12. Mr, Goodwin's Arg. 4gainft Input. an [Nereid. t 5 J needed. Anf. We do not love to fay , that beleevers , through this Impu- tation , are as Righteous, asChrift was : for that expreflìon might import that thereby they become as Righteous inherently , as He was ; which is falfe : But that thereby they are legally accounted Righteous , to all ende & purpofes, as if they themfelves , in their own perlons , had Fulfilled the Law : And therefore , though thereby they become , in Law-fenfe , Righ- teous ; yet they are inherently ungodly & unrighteous, till fan tifying grace make a change here ; & therefore Rand in need of Repentance. To that That Beleevers need Repentance for their daily & perfonal fail- ings , he faith , But they that have an entire d1` perfea Law- righteoufnefs Im- puted to them, have no fuch need , in any refpeft ; becaufe in the Imputation of a perfect Righteoufnefs , there is an univerfal non - Imputation of fin apparently in- cluded. Befider, if God doth impute a perfect Law righteoufnefs , it muff be fuppofed , that the rights if privileges , belonging to f ich righteoufnefs do accom- pany it , in the Imputation - -Now , one maine privilege hereof is to invef with a full dr entire right unto life , out of its own intrinfecal dT inherent dignity (LT worth , which it a privilege, wholly inconfiflent with the leap tincture offin , in the per fon that (ands pojfejfed of it. Anf. Where there is an Imputation of a perfect Righteoufnefs , there there is an univerfal Non Imputation of fin , in refe- rence toaEtual condemnation , or to the prejudging of the perfon, parra- ker of this Imputation , of the reward of life : but as this Imputation of Righteoufnefs maketh not a (inner to have been go (inner : fo neither Both it make their future finnes to be no finnes, or them to be uo finners , in time coming ; becaufe it is imputed for no filch end. (2) It is true , the Rights i& privileges belonging to this Righteoufnefs, do accompany the Impu- tation thereof; & that thereby beleevers become inverted with a full & en- tire Right to life, becaufe ofitsintrinfecal & inher ent dignity ; but it is ut- terly falfe, to fay , That this full & entire Right to life is inconfiftent with thejleaft tint -lure of fin, in the perfon poffeffed of it : & hereby he muff fay one of thefe two; either that there is no full Right had to life, while per - fons are in this life; or that there is a full and frnlefs perfeótion attain- able and had by all beleevers; fo that they finne no more , Both which arc molt falfe. But what will he fay of Faith , which he will have imputed for Righteouf- nefs, feing this muff bring alongtwith it the faine privileges; & fo exclude Repentance too ? To this he faith. The meaning it not, as if God either Im- puted , er accepted, or accounted faith for the felf fame thing, which the Right - eou fne fs of the Law is intrinfecally d7 formally ; ar as if God in this Imputation , eitber gave or accounted unto faith any power or privilege to jufli fie , out of any inherent worth of it. But the meaning only ir, that God, upon Man's faith, will as frilly jttfii fy him , as if he had perfeftly fulfilled the Law - -He that fulfilled the Law dr thereby is ju fli fled , it juliifted out of the inherent dignity of that, which j:íflifi'ethhim; but he that is juflified by faith, it juflifed by the free df gra- cious acceptation of it by God; for that , which is jufrifying in its own Nature, e by venue of its inherent worth d?'dignity. Anf. What God Imputeth & re- putethtobea Righteoufnefs , in order to juftificatioi, iruft be accounted T 2 duck
