On

the Excellency of the Soul.

my

prayers, my cries,

this

will

not do.

-

-- Ir

is

true,

there

is

not

enough

inmee,

but

will

not

Gods

mercy

-eke

it

out

?

-

--

No, it

is

neither

what

thou

doefl,

or

canfi

do, or canft

be

inabled to

do,

and

put

Gods

mercy meerly

without

any

more,

that

doth

it,

but

it

is

a fatisfaetion

to

jufiice,

a

price

paid for the foul; no foul

is

ever faved,

but

it

is

faved

in

the

way of

a

price, that

is

paid

for

;

and

this

thou mutt

ac-

quaint thy

foul

with, whichthoufands of

people

are igno-

rant

of; yet

they

hope

to

bee-

faved, but

how

?

they

will

pray

to

God

that

they

may

bee

faved, and

that'

God

would

have mercy

upon them; and

is

here

all-?

certainly`

this

is

not the

way

of

the

Gofpel; but

the

way

of the Gofpel

it

is

that

that

reveals unto the

foul

the

price

that

is

paid

for

a

.

foul,

even the blood of

Çhrifç

That

in Chrifi the great

Me-

diatour

of

the

fecond

Covenant , there

is a

perfe& fatisfa-

slion

to

Gods Infinite Juflice;

this

indeed

is

a

great

part

of

the Myftery

of the Gofpel;

this is

the

faving truth

of

the Gofpel, and thou mutt acquaint thy

foul

with

this truth

if

thou bee faved.

-

--

And when

thou

hearefi of

this

truth,

perhaps

thou

canft not

underhand

it

for the

prefent,

Oh

then thou

bada

need

go

to God

in fecret, and

bee

crying

to

him

that

hee

would reveal

this

truth unto

thee.

-

--

But

you will fay,it

is

not

our crying;

---

It

is

true,

it

is

not meet-

ly

our

crying, but there

is,fomething

of God

-

further

:

But

God

haih

made:many

gracious prornifes

of anfwering

our

cries,.

and

now

that

fo_hee

may make good

his

promifes,

bee

willfurther

reveal

this Myfiery

of

the

Gofpel

to

thee,

that

there

is a

neceilìty

of

fatisfa&ion

to

divine Juflice

for

thy

fin

that

bath

brought thy

foul

into

a

loft

condition.

Secondly, And further,.

A

neceflïty

of

a

perfe&

Righte-

oufnefs;

wee will

not

fpeak

of

any

thing

controverfal

about

its

which way

it

comes

to

bee

applied; but

this all

will

grant, that

there

is a

perfei

Righteoufnefs

that

wee

have

need

of;

the

way of

falvation

is a

perfe&

Righteoufnefs,

thou

mutt

have

a

furety

that

mufi have

a

perfect

.Righte-

ianefs

for

thee.

Thirdly, And

then

the

way

of

falvation

is

this,

it

reveals

an
