Bodies or Luminaries. This kind of Studying anti Contemplating the Heavens, is one of the greateft vanities under Heaven, a vanity often reproved in the Scriptures of the holy Prophets ; thus to be Starrgazers, or Heaven-beholders is out fin : but there is a Contemplation of the Starrs which is our duty and commendatior, ( Pfal. 8. 3, 4. ) When I confider (in that great volume of the works of God) the Heavens, the work of thy finger:, the Moon and theStarr: which thouhaft ordained ; what it man that thouart mindful' ofhim, &c. `David did both look and fee, he beheld theHeavens for a good purpofe, a godly purpofe, his own abafemenr, and the advancement of the glory and good- nefs, or of the glorious goodness of God, in spreading filch a Ca- nopy, fparkling with perpetual fires for him to walk under, and do his work by. And doubtlefs, did we with enlightned eyes b-- hold and fee thenatural Heavens, we fhould become more fptri- tual and heavenly. Secondly , In that we have here three words, lokk, fee, and be- hold. Note, The works ofGod, Efpecially the Heavens, are diligently to fie. Confdered. We may look to the Heavens and not fee , we may fee the Heavens and not behold them. Let.me here again mind the Rea- der of the Emphafis of that word ; it notes a looking unto, or upon the ©bjc&, as a Hunter looks for a Hare, or a Fowler for a Bird ; how dorh he pry and look into every tuft and bufli ? So the word is ufed (Ter. 5.26.) Among my people are found wicked men they lay waste (or they eye and behold ) AI one that fetteth fnare:, they jet a trap, they catch men. All the vifible works of God,much more the Heavens shouldbe diligently confidered, lookt into, feen, andbeheld. It was a good Conclu}ion of one of the Ancients, who faid , That man hath not looked unto Heaven, that bath only looked In alum ron upon Heaven.
