'Clfthe

runner

of

fight.

gular

Toile;

but if

hee

bee repulfed,yet this

is

no hindrance

unto him,why

hee may

not

intrap

them

in force

more fecret

ambufhment.Hence

it

is

that though

he

begin

his

fight with

cunning

policie,taking

vpon him the perfon

ofa

friend,and

transforming

himfelfe

into

an

Angell

oflight

;

yet this

is

no

,-

impediment

but that

he may afterwards

againe appeareand

violently

aflàult

vs

in

his owne likenes

;

as

hee

Iffiulted

our

Sauiour,hril with

fitb

till and fecret

temptations)ike

a

friend

and

welwiller

;

and when

he

could

not

fo

preuaife, hee

doth

not

flicke

to

appeare

like

himfelfe,

tempting

him

to outra-

gious

groffe

idolatrie,faying,All

this will I giue thee

if

thou

wilt

fall

downe andworfhip

me.

And

contrariesife

though

he

begin

his

affault

like

a

dine]'

and profeffed

enemie,this

is

no

hindrance

but that

heemay end

it

like

an

Angell

oflight,

and

a

flattering treacherous friend.

So

when

he

bath inticcd

vs

to

one

excreme

andpreuaileth

not,

this

is

no

impediment

but that

foone after

he may

allure

vs

to the

cleane contrarie

;

becaufe

though

wee

thinke

-the

firfl

motion to be

his

fugge-

flion,yet

we

may imagine

the other

to be

our

own

thought,.

or(as

Ifaid)the

motion

ofGods

fpirit,becaufe

it

is

quite

con

-

trarie to the former.

Seeing

therefore the matter

flandeth

thus; how

may wee

refifl

Sacan,confidering

that

wee

cannot

difcerne

his

fugge-

flions from our owne

cogitations

?

I

anf

vere

;

wee muff

bee

skilful

in

Gods word,

&

thereby

able

to

iudge what

is

good

and

what

is

euill,

to

difcerne

what

is

vertue and

what

is

vice,

what God

bath commanded, and

what

hee

hath forbidden,

which

be the

motions

ofGods

fpirit, and which the

fugge-

flions

of

Satan, and the

thoughts

of

our

corrupt

flefh;

and

then

are

wee carefully to imbrace

that

which our

confcience

approoueth

as

good, being

informed by

Gds

word, and

to

auoide

and reieát thofemotions which

wee

know to bee

euill,

whether they

doe proceede from

Satan,or

from

our

felues

;

for

it

is

not

greatlymateriali to know who

is

the au-

thor

ofthem,fo

we are

affured

that

they

are euil

and wicked;

neither

is

it

any

dangerous error

to

afcribe Satans

fugge-

flios

to

our corrupt flelh;or

to attribute

the

wicked

thought

of

our

owne

flefh

unto

Satan

:for though

he

be

not

we
