(hall not have

dominion over

sse,

becaufe we

are not under the Law,but under

Grace;

It

tells

you alto,

that

there

is

a

twofold

.feare

of

Hell, and punifhment

of

finne.

Firft,Of

Anxietie,and doubtfullneffe,in

refpe&

of

the

end.

Secondly,

OfCare

and

diligence

,

that

refpe&eth

the

meanes.

And for

the

firif

it faith,

that

this

is

the portion

of

very many

of

the

Saints

of

God,

of

fome all

their

dayes,

though

they

are fo, yet they know not

that

they

are fo; and therefore are under

anxious

and doubtful!

feares

of

Hell, and

Punifhment, notwithfranding

that

they are

in

the

armes

of

their

Father, from

whence indeed they

Ihall

not be

cart downer

as a

man

bound with

chaînes

on

the

toppe

of

a

tower, he

cannot

but

feare,

?and

yet

he

cannot fall;

He

cannot

fall,becaufe he is

fart

bound with ftrong

ch

tines:

He

cannot

but

feare,becaufe

he

cannot

a&ually,

and

cleárely

confider, often

times

, the

meanes

of

his

pre-

fervation.

And for

the latter,

a

feáre

of

the

wayes

and

meanes

leading

to

punifh-

ment,

as

fuch,

that

continuesupon all the

Saints

of

God

in

this

life:

neither

is

there

any

thing

in

this Doctrine,

that

is

fuited

to

a

removal! thereof.

And

this, it

faies,is

more, much more

ofufe

for the mortification

ofthe

flefh,

then

the

former.

Q.

It

fayes,

that

the great

and

Principali

meanes,

of

mortification

of

the

flefh,

is

not

feare

of

Hell and Punifhment,

but the

Spirit

of

Chrift,

as

the

Apo-

He

tells

us. Rom.8. 13.

if

ye through

the

Spirit

do

mortif

e

the

deeds

of

the

Alb,

yee

fballlive.

It

is the

Spirit

of

Chrift alone,

that

is

able to do

this

great

Worker

We

know, what bondage

and Religious drudgery form have

put

themfelves

unto, upon

this

account,and yet could never

in

their

lives

attatne

to

the

mortification

of

anyone

finne.

It

is

the

Spirit of

Chrift alone,

that

hath

foveraigne power

in

our

foules,

of

killing and making alive;

As

no man

quickneth

his

owne foule,fo no

man upon any

Confideration whatfoever,or

by the power

of

any threatnings oftheLaw,can kill

his own

finne;Thcre

was

never any

one

finne

truly

mortified by the Law, or

the threatningof

it;,

All

that

the Law

can

do,ofit

felfe,is

but to

intangle finne,and thereby

to

irritate,

& provoke

it,

like

a Bull

in

a

net,

or

a

beaft lead

to the

flaughter. It

is

the

Spirit

of

Chriftin

the

Gofpell,

that

cuts its

throate

& deftroyes

it;

Now

this

Do&rine

was

never

in

the

leaft

charged with denying

the

Spirit

of

God to

Believers,which whilft

it doth grant

&

maintaine,

in a

way

of

oppofition

to

that

late

Opinion,which advanceth it

felfe

againft

it, it maintainesthe mor-

tification

of

the

flefh,and

the

lufts

thereof, upon the only

true,

and

unfha-

ken

foundations.

3.

It

tells

you,

that

the

great

meanes, whereby

the

Spirit

of

Chrift work-

eth the

mortification

of

the

flefh,

and

the

Lulls thereof;

is

the

Application

of

the

Croffe

of

Chrift, and his

Death

,

and Love

therein, unto the foule;

and

faies,

that

thofe vaine endeavours,

which fome

promote

and encourage,

for

the

mortification

of

finne

conffting for the moltpart,

in flavifh,

bodily ex-

ercifes,

are

to

bebewayledwith

teares

of

blond,

as

abominations,

that

(educe

poore

foules

from the

Croffe

ofChrift;

For;

it

faies,this

work istruly,and

in

an

acceptable manner

only

performed, when

we

are

planted

into the

likeneffe

of

the death ofChrifl, having

our oldman crucified

with

him,

and

the

body

offinne

deflroyed.

Rom.

6.5,6. and thereupon by Faith

reckoning our

felves dead

unto

finne,

but alive unto

God.

v.

It

is

done only by

the

of

the

and

beingmade conformable

to his

death.

The

the

plifhing

that
