172, Daniel's Prophecy Vindicated. 'itb the deftrttïtion of the City inone Week, to be aïc.,mplifhed the laft fi,enyears ; ndie, ear Chriii fuffered above thirty years before the dell-rue:ion of the ;Waterfall Jerufalenn v. 26, 27. Anfwer. There appears no (ucia thing in the Text. The defirudion ofthe City and People is only mentionedasaconfequensof the curing off; and rejc ionof the My.. fab, without any limitation of time wherein it fhould be performed ; and de f fro it fucceeded immediately in the caufesof it, and di red tendency thereunto: if. 9.. In the lati place he(ayes, Thofe Pbrafes, v. 24. tofiniJh the Tranfgrlion, to make anend offin, topurge iniquity, and to bring in everlafting Righteoufüeff are manife¡t. Charaelers of the timeof the end, as(hall be(hewed. Anfw. But why are notthe other Ends expreffed in the ['róphecy, namely, to foal upVifion andProphecy, and to annoint the Molt Holy, here mentioned alfo ?, %Fitz is that Phrafe jl3) 13ti, tranflated, topurge iniquity; whereas it rather fignifies, to make Ar- tonementor Reconciliation for iniquity? Is it not becaufé it would bé very difficult to make any tolerable application of thefc things unto the, feafon, which is called the time of the End? In brief, thefe things are fo proper, fo peculiar unto the LordChrift, and the work of his Mediation, that in their tirff, direft and proper fenfe, they can- not be afcribed unto any other thinges or Perfons, withoutCoale impiety. And there is no reafon why weshould here wrelt them from their native and genuine Ggnitì_ cation; all which will be fully manifeft in our enfuing Expofìtion of the words themfelves. §. a o. I (hall not here intl.' on thole Reafons and Arguments whereby we prose the true and only Mfab tobe intended in this Prophecy : for as they are needlefs unto Chri- ftians, who are univerfally fatisfied with the truth hereof, fo we (hall from the Con- text and other Evidences, immediately confirm them againfi the Modern 7ewr, and their Matters. In themean time' wholly to remove this unexpeaed Objection out of our way, I (hail }hew the- invalidityof thofe pretenceswhich the fame Learned Author makes ufe of to countenance his Application Of this whole angelicalMeage unto the Chriftian Churches ofthefe latter dazes, which are thefe that follow. , Firft , faith he, Becaufe the ear CharatterixinÁ the end ofthofeyears, the confuming of tranfgreen, and the bringing in ofeverlafting righteoufnefl, are effe& to be accomplijhed in the Chriftian Churchat the fall ofAnticbrift. Ifa. a. 25, 26, 27, 28. and 27. 19. Apocal. 21. 27. "Anfm. Thefeare but Lome of theeffects mentioned, and oneof themnot rightly ex- preffed ; there are others in the Prophecy, asthe Annointing ofthemrft Holy , and rutting effuse Mef/iab, that can with no colour of probability be applyed unto that feafon. (2.) However Tomething analogous unto what is here fpoken of as an effrd and product of it, may be wrought at another time in the conformity of theChurch unto its Head, yet properly and direly as here intended, they are the immediate effc hs of the annointing, deathand fufferings ofJefus Christ. (3.) The places quoted out of Ifiab have no refpeEt unto the Churches of the latter dayes, other then all Scripture hath which is written for their Inftruçtion. (q..) The things mentioned, Apse. 21.5. 27. are dais of thiswork ofChrift in and towards his Church, not the work its felfhere expreffed, as the firft view of the place will mania. Ø. 12. Headds, Intheother Prophets, theReauration of the CbriiftianChurch from the Babylon ofAntiehrifi, is in likeTypes proportionably, reprefented. Ifa. io. & a t. & 13; a4. fer. 50. c 5s. Apoc.n4.6.7,8. &a6. ;9. &15.7. &18.2,/0,21. An*. I know not what is nnderllood by, reprefented in the like Types ; Here are no Types in thisProphecy, but a naked PrediCFion of the State and continuance of the JudaicalChurch until the coming of theMefliah, and of.the Work that he fhould ac- complifh at his coming, with theeffects and confegeiences thereof. To allowTypes in thefe things, isto enervateall theProphecies which we have ofhim in the Old Te- ftament. ( 2. ) The places ,dire, ed unto in Ifaiah and J remiah, intend not the deli- verance of the ChriftianChurches, unlefs it be Kr todeceo, .6705, and that in expreflions no way coincident with, or fuited unto this Prophecy. (3:) Where any thing is re- prefented in a Type, there Inuit be an accomplifhment of fdmewhat anfwerable unto it inthe Type its felfs and fuch wasthedeliverance of the Ifraelites from Babylon ofold Willed on by thofe Prophets. But here our Author allows no filch Type, but refers the whole Prophecy, firftlyand only unto the Chriltian Churches. (q..) In the Re- velation indeed the deliveranceof the Churches of Clarift fromAntichriftian Perfecution is,cforetold, which hinders not but that the coming and fuffering of the Meßiah, may be immediately intended, asundoubtedly it is, in this place, H, 4'.a
