THE

Public have a claim upon

the Editor

to be

satisfied

that

the four

following

Discourses, which are published

as

the

late Dr.

WATTS'S;

are

indeed

the production

of

his pen.

Their

authenticity

is

established by

the attestation of the late

Sir,

Thomas Abney,

in his own

hand writing, and

are.

printed

from his

Ma-

nuscript.

Though the date of

his

name

at

the

end

of

the

Sermons

is

°

Theo

balds, May

30,

1713," yet the title

prefixed

is

"

Four

Sermons

WATTS, 1702

;"

so

that

by this period

inscribed,

it

appears

that

the Doctor

was

at

the time

of

their

composition, only

about

27 years

of

age.

This circumstance

is

mentioned,

that

so

distinguished

an Author

as

the Doctor might not be degraded

from his

proper rank

by

the

severe

critic,

from

the publication

of

what

is

calculated

for

the

general

use of serious

Christians,

who

cannot but

prize any crumb

that

may fall from

a table,

which

has furnished

such

a

rich

variety of

food

for

the nicest palates.

The

proprietor of

the

Manuscript

has no pecuniary object

in

view,

but

will

consider himself amply repaid if

he should

have reason to

hope,

that,

by

this publication, (born

as

it

were

out of

due

tine,

and

under

some

disadvantages) the

voice

of

him may again be more

particularly

and

usefully

attended to,

who,

though

long

dead, continues,

and will

continue to the latest period, both

in

prose

and

verse,

to

speak

to

the

edification

of the

Church

of

Christ,

begs

leave

to

add,

that

he

has inserted

these

Sermons

the

consent

of

the

Proprietor,

and

with the

fullest

evidence

of

their authentieity.
