Continue

in

the

things

which

thou

haft learned

;

Why

e

Beeau

fe

thou haft

Beene

perfwaded

of

them

in

a

right

order.

2. Becaafe thou know-

eft

who

i

am

that

taught

thee

them.

So

this

motive,

if

we approve thole

that

teach

us

on

good

grounds,

it will make

us

hold

to

their teaching

more

firmely.

Not

that

I

would have

men

fweare

that

this

is

Gofpel,

becaafe we

fpeake

it

;

this

is

the

Church

of

Rome her

impudencie,

that rulethover

faith; but belceve things

,

becaufe you

finde them

fo

in

the holy Scripture ; yet

fo

farte

flick

to

them that

teach you

faith-

fully, and

live

Chriftianly,

as

not to

liften to another

lightly.

Yfe

z,

This letteth

us

fee

what they

aime at

that

fpeake nippingly

of

Miniflers

minifery,

as

they

are odde

men, the

moreyou follow them,

the

lefl'e

you

Mall

know what to bide by, &c.

Thefe

feeke

to

unfettle

us

in

our

Religion,

and

draw

us

to whore with fome falfe worfhipr

For

as a

man

that

fpeaketh to

a

woman

ill

of her

husband ,

doth loo

her minds from him, meaning

to

winnc

her

to himfelfe

:

So

doe

thefe,

&c.

Doïi.

Like

children;]

marke

then,

that

thofe

that

are under

a

catlnifiery,

We mull

not

muff

not alwayes

be

children for

knowledge.

Paul Both

lay it

in

the

chili

ftil

be

children

of the Corinthians

and

Hebrews

as a

fault,

that they

continued

to

be

in knowledge

babes,

under

,

when

as

they

fhould have

growne further. Paul telleth

us

that

the

Minifery.

we

muff

be

children in

malicioufneffe,

not

in underftanding;

For

the

Mi-

Cor.

is

not onely

a

feed to

us

, milke

to

feed

us

in

but

thong

meate,

by

benefit

of

which, we

are

to grow

up further and

t

further

in

the knowledge

of

the will of

God.

VP.

We

muff

know

then,that God doth

likewife

look for this fruit

from

us,thac we fhould

not

Dill

continue children. But

if

wee looke

to

the

properties

of

them

in

Scripture,

We

!hall fee

that

wee are babes

:

for

who

is a

child

a

He

that

cannot feed uponmeare but milke

,

that

can

Bate

nothing which

is

not chewed to hand

:

So

it

is

with

us,

for

when

we

are

taught the doftrine

of

predeflination,

of

taking away the

Law

through the death

of

Chriff,

of

the

Date

of

the

life

to

come, then

wee

think men walk in

the clouds,

and

love

to

foam

above our

capacities;`

whereas it

is

an

argument, not

ofthe

Teachers

fault,

but

of

our own

weakeneffe

,

that

wee

Dill

are children

,

who

cannot

beare

thong

meats,

nor

heare

that

more ripe wifdome which

the Word

revealeth..

3. Marke

what

is

the

property

of

ua, while

we

continue

in

childhood,

we

are

ready

to be

whirled

about

with

every

doUrine,

to dance

after

any

pipe

that

playeth.

For

fo

it

is in

things

that

are

tender, not come to growth,

they are

eafily

removed.

To

come

to

this

prefent comparifon of

children, and

a

little

to

confider,

that

w4 may finde

out the

reafon

of

this

dolrine.

There

are

three things

in

children which

make

them

fo flexible.

r.

By reafon

of

the

folly

that

is in

them, they

are over

credu

lous, for

foolifhneffe

is eafie

of

beleefe.

Prov.

4.15.

The

fimple beleeveth every

word.

a. They

are

newfangled &fickle, to day they will play with

a

thing, to morrow

caD

it away.

3.

They

Doîi.

We

are

apt

in

thisour child-

hood

to

be car-

ried about with

every

doctrine.

Three things

which

make

children

wave-

ring.
