For the
opening
of
the Precept;

intimate
that there
is
a
lawfull
ufe
of
wine
for
health
and
ftrength,

it is
the

God

fatiate and
content
the deliireofnature: For
it
is
a
piece
of
the curie, to
drink and
not
be
fatisficd

this precept fprbiddeth
all
excefve
or inordinate,either
affecting,
or
ufing
of
wine, or
any
drink
intoxicating
:
For
drunkenneffe
is
not only
fuch
as
taketh
away
the
ufe
ofreafon,
the feete,
taking
of
wine
to vomit, to
fickneffe,
they
made
the
King
fick with
flagons,
but
all
exceflive
ufe
is
fo
calIed,diinking
to inflammation,

all
inordinate aWeting or
ufing: For
as
there
is
an
inward gluttony, when
the
thoughts
run upon
the diet on
ly,
and
a
man
cheweth the cud before he get

meat

when the
thoughts
and
affeEtions
are
carried inordinately toward
the
cup, it is
a
kinde
of
inward drunkenneffe , when
a
mans
lips are
alwayes hanging
after
fuch lettïce,
his
heart
is
drunken
,
'though
bee fitterh
in
pri-
vate
:
So
all
inordinate ufing
of
it,
either
in hunting after
it,
in
doting
upon
the
quality of drinkcs,or
in
taking
it
unfeafonably,
or
in
drinking
for goffipping
,
for company
:
they
arc all
to be conceived
as
degrees
and
occafions
forbidden.
The

of
this
is
to rebuke the
liquid lives
of
many
that do
nothing
