the Excellency

of

the

Soul.

x85.

with all'delicacies. Luther

I

remember

hee

hath an ex-

preflion

,

That

hee had

rather

bee

in Hell-with

'the

Word,

than

in Paradife without

the

Word.

Ninthly,

In

the

ninth place

there-

is

another fort

that

lofe their

fouls by

furfeiting

of them;

their

fouls do furfeit

with the cares

and pleafures

of this

life; they glut their

hearts with the

delights,

and pleafures,

and cares

of this

world, until their

fouls

get

a

furfeit and

die

of

them;

giv=

ing

liberty

unto their hearts

to

delight themfelves in all

outward

contentments, efpecially

if

they bee lawful

:

Now

a

man

or

woman

may furfeit their fouls,

and undo

them-

Lititù

perimus

felves

by

lawful things;

as a

man

may

not onely

deflroy

on,

his

life

by eating poifon, but

by

a

furfeit

of

good

meat

,

though

the

meat

bee

good

, yet hee may furfeit upon

it

:

fo,

though

the

things

of

this

world,

the cares, and the plea-

fures

maybee (

as fume

things are

) in

themfelves

lawful,

yet

by

an inordinate and immoderate

letting

out thy heart

tolawful

things, thou

mayea furfeit thy

foul; and

it

may

die

of

that

furfeit

: ?ylany

pen

think themfelves

out

of dan-

ger,

if the

things

that their hearts

are

upon;

bee

in

them-

felves

lawful,

they

are

not

fwearers, and whoretnafters

and

drunkards, and theeves,

as

others

are, and therefore

they

think

their

fouls may bee faved

:

I

fay, thou mayefl

bufie thy

heart onely

about

that

which

is

in

its

felf

lawful;

and yet thy

foul

may

take

a

furfeit and

perifh eternally.

Tenthly and laflly; Many

lofe

their

fouls

by forfeiting

them,

and

that

by

thefe

two

waits.-

Firfl,

A

man forfeits

his

foul,

as

men

do their

Coppy-

holds,

by

not tendering

that

homage

to their

Lord that is

due,

by which

they hold

their Lands,

and

fo

their Lands

come

to

bee forfeit;

fo

doll

thou

;

God

hath given

thee

thy precious foul, more worth

-than

all the

world,

and thou

holdefl

it

of God,

but

fo

as

thou muff

tender

up

to

this

Lord

that

homage that-is

due

to

him,

that

is,

thou

muff

worfhip

God When

wee

come

to

worfhip-

God,

this

is

that

wee

do,

wee come

to

tend

er

-up

that homage

that

wee acknowledge

to

bee

due

to

God

for thefe fouls
