On

the

Excellency

of

the Sont.

41

things

that

you

minde,

and

if

you

would fpeak as

in the

prefence of God ,

you

cannot

but

acknowledge

that.the

things

ofthe

fiehh,

are

the

things

that

do

take

up your

heartst

that

are

the

adequate

obje&s

of your fpirits,

and

you

think your great

good

and

contentment

lies.

in

them;

fo

that

if

:fo

bee you might but live alwaies

in

this

world,

and

have

thofe

contentments to

theflelh,

as you

delire, you

would

care

for

nothing elfe, but

your

hearts would bee fully

fa-

tisfied; this

is

living after

the

flefh

;

now

the

Scripture tells

us

clearly,

_.

that

thofe

that

live

after

the

flehh

thus, fhall

die.

It

is

your

great

care

that

the

feefh

bee fatisfied, and

it

is

Gods

threat,_

that

when you make

it

thus your

great care

to

fatisle the

fleh,

that

you

fhall

die

;

fo

that

this is a

periíhing.condition

unto

you.

Seventhly, Yea

further, what foul

foever

is

but

under the

dominion of

any

one tuft,

that foul,

if

it

fhould

now

depart,

would certainly

bee

loll

:

Not

onelyfuch

as

live in

all kind

offing, that the

confiant

courfe

of their

lives,is in every kind

of

fin;

but

if

there

bee

but any one reigning;

ruling

fin ,

if

there

bee

but

any one finful way

that

God hath convinc'd

thy confcience of

to

bee

a

fin, and

yet becaufe

of

gain,

or

delight,

or

pleafure,

or

honours,

orrefpes,

thou

doll go

on in

a

conf

}ant courfe, and way, and pra&ice

of

that

fin

though

it

beet but one

fin,

fo

that

thou

art

a

flave

to

any,

one

lull, certainly this

foul

of

thine,

if

God

works

no

o-

otherwife upon

it,

than

yet

hee hath done,

will

cer-tainly be

loll;

and

that

is

clear out

of

Rom.

6.

14. For

Jin fhall

not

have

dominion over

you,

foryet

are

not,

under

the

Law,

hat

kinder

grace.

._:I

would reafon-fronuhis Scripture, thus, what

foul foever

is

not

under;

grace,; under

the

covenant of

grace,

and

under the Mercy

that

there is in that

covenant,

that

foul,

if,.now

it

fhould depart, mull perifh

.eternally;

but

whofoever

is

under the dominion of any one

-fin,

is

notitn

der

grace; for

theScripture plainly

faith;

That

fin fhall not

have dominion over

us,

if

wee

bee under grace :

If

our

fouls

bee in

fuch

an eflate,

as

they

bee

under the

grace

of

the

Gofpel,

then

there

mull

not

any

one

fin have dominion
