Or

is

it

the

part

perfon

to

that

To

Stage

for

to

this

part

of

the pageant

in

hand upon,

there

are many

fuppofalls

fixed

by our Author ,

that are to

beare up the

weight

of

the

whole,

which upon

tryall

will

appeare

to

be

ces, painted anticks,

to.

and purpofe whereunto they are applied.

Firft, 'Tis

fuppofed,

that

the end

of

all

there admonitions,

is

ineerely and

folely

to

prevent the

Saints

from

final! Apoftafys

and

that

they

are

to

beware

of

the

wiles

and affaults

of

Satan, only leaft he prevaile over

them

,

tocaufe

.

them to depart utterly

from Gods

That

this

is

fuppofed

in

this difcourfe

is

.

evident,becaufe

upon

the granting

of

a

promife,that

they

shall

not be

fo

pre-

vailed againft, they are judged all ufeleffe and ridiculous : Now who knows

not but

that

Satan may winnow , and

in

tome

meafisre

prevaile

againft

the

Saints,

to

the Difhonour

of

God,

the

Reproach

of

the

Got-pelf ,

Grieving

of

the

Spirit,

and

Scandali

of

the Church, although they

fall

not totally

and fi-

.

nally from Gods And

that

many

of

thofeAdmonitions, tend

to the

preferva-

tion

of

Believers, from fuch

falls

andfailings,

is

more

evident

than

to

need a-

ny

Demonftratiorrby

confideration

of

theparticular

inftances.

I

I.

Secondly,

It

fuppofeth

as

is

expreft,

that

Believers may

fall

into all

manner

of

horrid

f

nnes

and

Abominations

,

which

is

the thing

in Queftion

,

and by

us

pun&ually

denied:

What

ever their furprizalls

may

be,

yet there are

finnes

which they

cannot

fall

into:

and the great abomination

of

every

finne ,

that

'tis

committed

with the whole

heart,

and

with

full

confent, they are not at all

expofed

or

liable

unto,

as

hath been proved.

4 12,

Thirdly, That

there

is

an

inconfiftency

between Promifes and Precepts,

in

reference

to the fameObje&

5

that

God

should promife

to

worke

any

thing

effe

&ually in us,

and

yet

require it

of

us,

is

thought

ridiculous, and on

this

ac-

count

the great

folly

here imputed

to the

difcourfe

framed

for

the

Holy

Ghoft,

is

propofed

to

confift in

this,

that

God

fhould

exhort

us, to

watch

a-

gainft

the

affaults

of

the Divell,and yet

promife

that

by

his

Grace,

he will ef-

fe&ually

work

in

us,& for us,

the

very fame things

A

fuppofall deftru&ive

to

the

wholenature

of

theNew-Covenant,

eafily

difproved by innumerable

in-

ftances.

4.13.

Fourthly,

That

Believers

are

to

be

wrought

upon to obedience

alwaies,

whatever the frame

of

their

fpirits be ,

by

-the fame

wales

and

meaness

Thence

'tis

that

promifes,

promifes

of

higheft and greateft

affurance,are
