Confutation

of

Papifls and

Lutherans.

Ephefians,

Cl,ap,z.

V s

the other

of

members

of

the fecond Adam:now

in

the

first refpeéì:,they

bring

forth

children

of

wrath;

in

the

fecond, children

of

the

Covenant;

children

of

graces,as

I

may

fay.

But here

many doubts may be moved.

First,

how the Parent whole faith

is

but for himfelfe

to

live

by

,

can

by

his

faith

infinuate his children into

the Covenant.

Againe, when

many

a

Noah

have

chews, how

faith

can beleeve

filch

a

thing;

for

the thingbeleeved

muff

be

infallible.

To

the

first,

the

faith

of the Parent doth bringthe

child into the

Co-

venant,

yet

fo

as

the

child liveth

by

his

owne faith, which

is

not

to

be

denied

in

fuch

as

furviving come

to

fellowship

of

like

precious

faith.

But

many Infants dye before

they come

to heare and to have

faith,

for ought we

can

know;

what

may

be

faid

to

this cafe

They

live

bytheir

faith,

becaufe in this cafe,

the

faith

of

the

Father

is

the

childs faith alto;

For looke

as

it was

juft

with God, to

reckon

the

deed

of

/dam,

all

our

deeds:

fo iris

not

ill

befeeming

his mercy

and

justice,

to

let

in

this cafe,

the

faith

of

the Parent

stand

for

the

child.

For the fecond,

Faith

is

not wavering, though the eventanlwer

not,

becàufe it

doth not abfolutely

apprehend this falvation for

every

one,

but

leaveth place to

Gods

fecret

judgements.

But

how

can it

thus conditionally beleeve without wavering

c

It

is

one

thing to waver, anotherthing to

beleeve

with

condition;

we

beleeve we

shall

have

outward things, yet

with condition.

A

third

question is,

how

this

diftinéhion can

efcape

a

contradinion;

that

which

is

true, must be true

in Tome

time now

if

an

Infant

may

be

borne

having the

Covenant

,(which

in

fome

cafe

we

teach)

there

is

no

time

in

which this Infant

can

be

Paid

a

child

of

wrath.

It

followeth nor,

for there

is

nothing

wherein it may

not

bee

faid

a

child, though

it be borne with application of

the Covenant:

for

as the

Parent hath

a

double person,

fo

hath the Infant

;

in

the one,

it

isa

child

of

the Covenant,in the

other,of

wrath.Marke for

conclusion these

three

things.

t.

Every one

is a

fon

of

wrath

in

Adam, even

in

that

inftant,

and

in

Gods

eye, with

whom

there

is

neither

pall

nor

to come; Wee,we

are

all

of

us

dead.

2. This wrath abideth,till application

is made

of the blood

of

Chrift.

3.

If

this

be

even

with our

first

being, whenfoever

it is,it taketh

not

away the

refpedl

of our naturali condition

:

O

miferable man that

I

am!

&c. This

was

true

of

lehn

Baptif1,

yet from the wombe

was

Etified.

To

confute

the

flanderous Papists and Lutherans,

who

would

make

us

Anabaptists,

as

denying

fin

Originali, denying the guilt

of

it

; where

we teach it

in

Infants, we teach

it worthy

of

wrath

;

teach

the

perlons

as

comming

of

Adam,children

of

wrath,yet

as in

the Covenant

ofgracc

to havepardon, and the

feale

is a

leale

fet

to this, not

as a

foundation

or

beginning

of

it.

Secondly, we

may

fee

what it

is

that

is

borne

of

the

fiefh,

and

there-
