Humility
is a
grace
of
the
Spirit, wrought
in
the
heart , which doth
caufe
a
man
inwardly
and
outwardly
to
Thew
Iowlinetl'e
toward God
and man. Here
are
foure things to touch
'upon.
The
Efficient; it
is
the Holy Ghoft that doth
work it
in our hearts,
and
work our
hearts
to
it: Such a
fpirit
of
pride
doth by
nature
beare
fway in our
hearts, that
we can no skill
of
humility untill we
be taught
and
moulded thereunto by Gods Spirit
:
as
pride is
an
eminent fort
from Satan,
who
firft
fuggefled, and
as
it were
breathed
it into
the
hearts
of
our firft parents:
fo is
humility
in fpeciall mantic'.
from Gods
Spirit.
Whence
was
Chrift
fuch
a
paragon
of
humility, but hence,
that
he
had the Spirit without
meafuree
There
is
the
fubjeét, the heart; for fo we
are
taught when
humility
is
made
a
property
of
the heart,
as a
contrite
and
humble
heart.
So
was
Chrift
lowly
in
heart. As pride
like a
malter Pharify doth
affeét
the belt
roome
in
man, and festes
it felfe in
the heart,
as
every where we
heare
of
the
pride
of
the heart
:
The
pride
of
thy
heart hath
deceived
thee
:
fo
humility
is
not
of
the right kind, nor hath
its
right
place
,
unleffe it be
lodged
in
the heart.
But
letthe
hid
man
of
the
)earl
bee
deckt with
the
incorruptible
grace
of
a
meek
and
quiet
fpirit.
We
have
the
work
or
effeEt
of
humility, which
is
the
(hewing
forth
of
lowlineffe
inwardly
in
the
mind , and
outwardly
in
our words
and deeds.
As light, where
it
is, cannot but
Thine ,
nor
fire choofe
but
burne
:
fo where humility is, it will
make
a
man frame
himfelfe
thereto
within and without.,
In
his
mind
to
take up
lowly
thoughts
and delires:
without, to acquaint himfelfe with words
and
all courfes
which
fuit
with the lowlinetfe
of
his
mind. A
bladder when
it
is full
of
wind
doth
fwell fo
big,that
we cannot gripe
it in
ones
hand,
but
when
the wind
is
preffed
or
let our, it
is a
(mall
matter,
and
is
eauly
contai-
ned
in
a
little
compaffc:
fo
pride
doth
fo puffe up a
man
that
he
fwel-
leth big
at heart, looketh big,
fpeaketh
big,
and
is
hardly
fatisfied
with
any
honour;
But when
humility commeth, that
preffeth
our
that
wind
with which the heart was fwollen,
and
then
a
man fetteth much
leflè
by
himfelfe, and
is
lowly
in
his
words
and lookes,
and can make him-
felfe
equal' with thofe
of
low
degree.
What
lowlineffe
within
did it
Phew
in
Abraham,
who
doth
efleem
himfelfe but dull
and
afhesein
David
who
was as
a
weaned
child
in his
thoughts touching
himfelfee
Yea in
Chrift,
who
faith
of
himfelfe,
that
he
was
a !Yoffie
and
no
man?
What'
lowly
fpeech and gefture
did
it
bring forth
in
Ruth, who
ravifhed
at
Boaz
his kindnes
toward her,
fell on
her
face and
bowed
