Ephefans,

Chap.5.

601:

deth,

when

the Apoftle

faith

of

them,

they were

darkneffe,

he

Both

let

us fee, What was

their

condition

and

ours

by

nature ,

wee

are nothing but

every

way

darknt

fe,

our

felves,

ourmayes, our

ejotes,

all

wofull.

There

is

a

threefold

darknefl'e:

Of

ignorance.

Of

fin.

Of

mifery.

Now

far

the firft,

How

had

itbeene with

thefe

Ephejians,and

how

is

it

with

us[ Truly they

had

not the Spirit

of

enlightening on the

eyes

of

their minde, they had not the Lamp

of

the

Sanctuary, this glorious

light

of

the Gofpell

of

Chrift.

Now

confider

what

a dark

world

were this

if

the

Sun

were forth

of

the firmament,

if

the

eyes

of

men

were

all

plucked

forth

:

and

though

we have

the

funfhinc

of

the Go-

fpel,

yet whilewe

are our felves we have no eye

of

the minde

to

fee

by

it,

and

therefore

aredarkeneffe.

2.

From this commeth another

darknefi'e,

of

fin,

in

our wils,

affe-

etions,

words,works

;

For

if

the

eye

be

darke

,

allthe

body is

darke like-

wife,

and

if

the

eye

of

the

minde be

forth,

all

the powers

of

the

foule

and

body that

fhould

be ordered

by

it, cannot

but

be full

of

error,

be-

ing

blindly guided.

g.

So

all

of

us in

the third

place

ate

full

of

miferies

,

which the

Scripturecalleth

darkneffe,

the

wrath

of

God,

many

evils in

this life,

and we

are all

fubjeét to eternall condemnation

in

the

life

to come,

which the Scripturecalleth utter

darkneffe.

Wherefore

let

us

labour

to

come out

of

this eftate,darknetfe

is

fear

-

full and

uncomförtable,

he

that

is

in

darkneffe knoweth

not wherehe

goeth,

on

what danger

he

runneth

,

fuch

is

the way

of

the wicked,

Prov.4.19. they

fee

not the crookedwaits of their fin,thc judgements

of

God

threaten them here

and

there, they

goe on and fall into

them.

2.

We

fee

that

theft

and

all

opts,

when

we

are

inChrif1,areenlightened,

yea made

light

by

him

r

We

are renewed

to knowledge

Wee

are

made

newcreatures, cleanfed from

the

lufts

of

the

flefh.

Ton

that are Chrlfls

have put

of

the

fefb

with

the lofts of

it. Wee

are fuch with

whomGod

is

pleafed, on whom

his

bright

countenance fhineth

here

;

Who

are

be-

gotten

to

aneverlafling

inheritance

in

light,

futh

as

never eye beheld.

This therefore

fhould make

us

bleffe

God

who bath

called

us

to

fuch admirable

light,

and it muff

warnt

us

to

thew

forth the propertie

of

light,that

is

to

thine,

if

we

be fuch

as are

light

in

the Lord.

Wee

have loft our

Thine,

our

light

is

under fome buthell or

other

;

wee doe

not

let the fupernaturali light

of

grace fo

Thine

from

us

that behold

us.

It

may

be fome will

fay

,

that they

finde

nothing

Idle

to

bee true

then this

we

fay,they are

full

of

darknefl'e.

We

are

made light

but

in

part,

like

the Moon

in

the

wane,not when

the

is in

the Full

;

though therefore

in

part wee are

dark,

yet we

are

likewife

in

part inlightened.

Some will fay,

that

if

they doe

Phew

forth thefe

things

none

doth

regard them,

nay

many will mock

at

them

as

precife

andiioly.
