On

the

Excellency

of

the

Soul.

Firft,

Becaufe

the

body

all the

time

a

man doth live in

this

world,

it

was

the

onely

or

mofl

immediate inftrument

that the

foul

had

to

work

and

to

fin

by

:

And

certainly

God mull needs hate

that body,

and

curie

it,

that

did

be-

low, to

the

foul,

becaufe it

was

the

only

inllrument

of the

foul

to

fin

by.

Secondly, Miferable mull the body alto bee

,

becaufe

when

fuch

a

loft

foul

shall bee

united

unto

the

body,

the

very extremity

of

the

foul

mull needs

bring mifery

upon

the

Body

alto

;

as

thus,

When

Chrifl had

the

apprehenfions

of

his

Fathers wrath and difpleafure

in

his

foul , how

did

it

work upon

his

body even

fo

as

to caufe even clodders

of

blood to

fall

from him

?

Now,

what caufed this pain in

his

body,

but

the terrors of

God in

his

foul

?

and

if

it

was fo

with Jefus Chrifl,

that

had

but

fin

imputed unto him, then

certainly

the body of

a

damned creature mutt needs bee

in

very great

and dreadful

torment, to

which

this foul

is

uni-

ted.

If

a

holy

man

cried out

,

Thy

arrows

flick,

fafl

in

wee

and

thy

hand

prefeth

mee

fore,

there is no'foundnefs

in my

pfal' 38,

,,.

lefh,

becaufe

of

thine

anger,

neither is there

any, reSI

in my

bones,

becaufe

of

my

fin.

1

fay,

if

the anger

of

God

caufed

this mifery

unto

Davids

body for

his

fin

,

what

mifery

will

that

bee when all

the faculties of

the foul

(hall

bee

filled

with the wrath of

God

to their

utmofl capacity

?

O

then,

I

fay, what

dreadful

evil

and pain will

there

bee

unto

the

body

united unto

fuch

a

foul

I

The

fecond

aggravation

of

the

lofs

of

the

foal, it

is

this,

That

when

it

comes

to

bee

in this loft

condition

,

then

it

comes

to

bee in

the deadfulleft and moll miferable con-

dition that

any

Creature

is

in,

except

the Devils

them

-

felves. The Scripture

tells

us;

it

is

an evil

thing to have

riches kept

for

a

mans

hurt

:

But

O

then what an

evil

is

it,

and

will

it

bee, for

a

man to

have an

immortal

foul

for

his

hurt?

this

is

the condition

of

a

loft

foul.

The third

aggravation

of

the lofs

of the

foul,

is

this,

It

will have

none

to pitty it,

in that its

miferable loft condi-

tion

it

is

in.
