Epheliatu,Chap.1.

I

be

Paid

;;both

the

fpirit leave

us

at the time

of

our

full

redemption !

No,

but

though

it

dwelleth with

us,

yet

it

teat

th

to

be

a

pledge

of

further

matter; even

as

the money

given

a

man

in

earneft

bideth

with him

when

hee

bath the whole fummepaid, but it

is

no longer

an

earneft

of

further money to be received.

This then

is

our

comfort, who

have found this

holy

fpirit

dwelling

vp.

and

working

in us

:

Though

it may leave filch

as

Saul,

whom it never

fanEtified,yet

it

(hall never

depart quite from them

whomit bath

in

truth

fanftified ,

but they

(hall like

Di/vie/then have it praying

in

them, that

is,teaching them to pray, when they think themfelves molt devoid

ofit.

Obferve laftly, that

he faith we have

a

pledge given us, till the re-

demption come which

is

purchafed

for

us

;

that

here

the

faithfull

fee

not

themfelves fully delivered

:

We

are the

Seance

of

God,

but

it

appeareth

not

what

we

jhall

be

;

we belee

ve life

everlafting, we doe

not

fee

it, yet

we

by

nature lye

in

dart

-neffe

offinne

and

mifery, God will have our

light returne

fucceffively, even

as

the

light

ofthe

Sunne,

which

(hineth

from

one degree

to another,

till

it

come to

full

itrength,Prov.q..

There

is

a

double redemption, the

one

which we

have

by

faith,verf7.

the

o-

ther which

we (hail

have

in

that great

day

;

This redemption belongeth

immediately

and directly

to

man, to

the creature

mediately; for

in

that

great day

the

creature (hall be

changed from the

vanity and bon-

dage

of

corruption

to which

it

is

fubjec.

As the

firft Adams

treafonable

defection

deferved

to

be punifhed

both

in his

perfon,

and

in all

the

things which

appertained to him

;

fo it

was

meet

that

the

fecond

?dams

obedience

fhould

not onely reflore man, but

the creature alto which

might

any way

be

a

fit

appurtinance to him

in

his

Elate

of

glory.

But one

may aske,

what

ufe

there

(hall be

of

there vifible heavens,

of

the earth,

when

mans manfion

is

prepared

in

thofe third heavens !

In

thefe things

we

are not to be curious

:

What if

God

will have

them

and

as a

mo-

nument

of

his

former power, wifdome,

goodnefl'e,

toward

us

in

our

pilgrimage

e

Againe, we feeit

is a

flate belonging to

earthly

Princes, to

have houles here or there, which

fometimethrough

all

their

raignes

they doe

not

once

vifit.

What

refpecleth man,ye may

find in

that

I have

written on the

r

3.verfe.

The

ufe is,

to

encourage

us

equally

to

beare

the

evils

which

preffe V ¡e

us

:

Had

we

nothing to complaine of, ourredemption might

well feeme

already pa(t. O this

is

our

rejoycing,

here

we

know mifery

in

many

re-

gards,

but our

Jubilie,

our year

of

redemption hafteneth: God

doth

his

children, that he

will have

their bell

When

travellers

let out

in

the fogge

and darke

mitt

ofthe

morning, it doth

comfort

them

that they know the day

is

at hand,

and

they

(hail

have

itfayrer

:

On the

contrary,

if

thou getteft not this pledge

of

the

holy

fpirit

of

Chrift,

thou

haft received

thy confolation, nothing doth

abide

theebut weeping,wailing,and gnafhing

of

teeth,

an

eternal' night,

a

reckoning

which

will be more bitter, then

the

pleafures

Having

thus

laid

down the benefit, he commeth
