On-

the

Excellency

of

the

Soul.

do

to

bee

faved,

and wee

have

had great hopes of

young

people;

but

here

is

the

policy

of the Devil,

when the

Lord

was bringing the

greatell

harvetl

of

young people

within

this

three

or four

years

to

himfelf,

as

ever was,

i

think, time

the beginning

of the world, and the Devil

knowing

that

bee

could

nor

get them

to

turn to

lewdnefs and prophanenefs

prefently again,

therefore

hee

labours to

put

them

upon

turning

all

their Religion

intoquettions about

controverfal

things,

which

they

could not

be

able

to

mannage and under-

(land, and

fo

puts

them olpthe

thoughts

of

that

great

quefli-

on,

hat

they

'hook!

do to

bee

faved

?

But

O

labour

to

inquire,

and

to

bee fatisfied

and refolved in

that quetlion

betimes.

Secondly,

If

you

ask this

quetlion,

as you

are to do

it

betimes,

fo

do

it

earnefily,

do

it

with

a

great deal

of

fer-

vency

of fpirit,

as

a

matter of

infinite

concernment;

fo

in

Iatth,

When hee

wasgone

forth

into

the

way,

there

came

one

running,

and

kneeled to

him, and

asked

him

,

good

z7"lafler,

what

(hall

I

do

that

I

may inherit eternal

life

?

Flee

came running

with

a

great

deal

of

fervency and

earnetlnefs

about

the

bufinefs; and

the

fervency

that

youth hath thould

bee

manifefled

in

this, in being

carnal

in

the inquiring

af-

ter

the

way

of falvation;

people

that

are

elder,

they

think

they

are

well

enough,

and

they have

not lived

fo

long,

they

think,

as

not to

know how

to

bee faved

all

this

While, and

therefore will

not

enquire;

fo

that their

fpirrts do

not

boil

with

that

fervency and heat

as

young ones do

hee

came

`running

to Chritl.

Thirdly,

If

you

do

inquire, inquire fincerely

,

with

a

heart truly

willing

to

do

wh

atfoever

-God

(hall

make

known

to

you

;

wee

are

this day about this

great

quetlion,

what

a

man thould

do

to

fave

his

foul

?

I

fuppofe many of

you

would

bee

glad

to

know

what fhould

bee done,

and mee-

thinks every one

is

ready to

ask filch a

quetlion as

this

is

:

But before

wee come

to

anfwer

it,

let

mee

fpeak

to

you

as

in the

Name

of God,

do

you

delire

to

know

it

with

a

heart

truly

willing

to

yeeld

to

whatfoever

thould

out

of

Gods

Word

bee

revealed

to

you

?

'put

this

to

your own hearts

before
