On

the Excellency

of

Soul.

S.

but

here

is

the

great

queftion

,

Men

and

Brethren, what

fha11

I

do to

bee

faved?

And

if

people when they

meet

together

would bee taken

up,

and

bee

asking

of

this

queflion one

of

ano

:her,

it

would prevent

a

great

many wrangling

and

jangling queftions,

that men

fpend their time

in

;

oh when

they are

asking

of

you

many

fuch

vain queftions,

anfwer

thofe vain

quetlions

but

thus

,

I

but do

you know how

mie

may do

to

be

faved

?

tell

mee fomething of the

way

of God

about

the

falvation of

my

foul

;

and that-is

that, that

both

Ministers

and Chriftians fhould moll

aim

at,

to

help one

a-

nother

in

;

they fhould

not

fill

peoples heads

with

curious

quefiìons, and fpecially

young

ones, for

that

is

a

great

de-

ceit of the

Devil

at

this day

:

There

was

never

a

time

where-

in there

was

a,

more

hopeful harveft

of

young ones,

than

there

was

two

or

three

years

time in

England, and in

this

City, and

becaufe the Devil taw

it

was

in vain

to

tempt

their hearts

to

their

former prophanenefs, hee

labours

by

all means

to

caufe

them

to

fall

-into

the

hands

of

vain

jang-

ling people,

that

(hall

fill

their

heads

with

a

great

many

curious

quefttons about controvetlìes,and things

that

they:do

not underhand,

and

fo

take

.

away

the very ilrength

and

life of

the

work

of the

Word

upon

them,

when

as

the

Scrip-

ture

tells

us

plainly,

that

wee tnuft:not receive the weak

in

Faith

unto doubtful

difputations. But

-

Obje

&.

Tau willtay,

wee

muft inquire after

all truths,

Anfw.-

It

is

true, but

feafonably,

_in

their

due time;

It

is

not

for young

converts,

before they

bee.fetled

in the

main

things

of

Religion, to

have

their

heads

filled

with doubtful

difputations;

it

is

the

plain Scripture,

and

it

is

ass

plain

,

if

wee would

underfland it

as

Thou (halt

not

Real,

or-

commit

adultery; oh this bath

hindered the falvation

.of many

a

foul

!

Now

therefore

this

is

that

that

I would aim

at,

to turn

the firength

of

your fouls

into

this

great queftion, what

(hall

wee,

do

to bee

faved

?
